Unlike bourbon and rye, which have centuries of history in the United States, American single malt is a relatively young style of whiskey: despite single malt’s very long history in Scotland, Ireland, Japan, and elsewhere, the earliest whiskey that called itself an American single malt only dates back to the 1990s.

Nevertheless, the style has rapidly become popular and is one of the hotbeds of innovation in American whiskey. In fact, it’s likely poised to gain official recognition from the federal government in the near future.

American single malt must be made from 100% malted barley at a single distillery. But beyond that, like global single malt, American single malt as a style encompasses a broad array of flavors. This bundle showcases three of them, each one very different: a peated single malt (from the very first distillery to ever definitively make American single malt) that will be familiar to lovers of smoked whiskies from anywhere in the world; an award-winning Iowa single malt that was aged in new oak and finished in a sherry cask, giving it a deep and intense sherried richness; and an unsmoked, beer-influenced single malt made from grain sourced from a single farm in the Pacific Northwest.
