Lost Lantern hand-selected this cask from Day’s Defile in Shelley, ID. Named for famous trapper John Day and the narrow gorges that scour Idaho’s towering mountains, Day’s Defile makes whiskies that reflect the climate and natural resources of the northern Rockies.

This unusual cask, an 8-year-old straight triticale whiskey, was made from 80% triticale and 20% malted barley. Triticale, a hybrid of wheat and rye dating to the 19th century, brings out the best of both grains: the softness of wheat, and the spiciness of rye. The soft, inviting nose has notes of apple-spiced oatmeal and dried grass. The palate is fresh yet hefty, with hints of green apple, vanilla, honey nut cereals, and toasty grain. It is our first triticale whiskey.
